5th grade Adopt-A-Family Activity

If you've haven't had time this busy holiday season to contribute, you still have an opportunity tomorrow.  If you can bring a gift tomorrow either during the day or at the activity (5:30 to 7pm in the cafeteria) that would be fantastic.  If you can't - bring yourself and donate your time.  This is a great way to teach our youth to be socially responsible and give back to the community.  This is a totally free event and is a great way to celebrate the true meaning of the holidays.

5th grade Adopt A Family activity

I am SO excited about this 5th grade activity.  Here's the info...

Dear Families,

For December, the 5th Grade has "adopted" a family.

Our Adopted Family consists of a Grandmother raising her three 5 year old grand-daughters (triplets!), age 5 (both parents are deceased). These children have never had an actual Christmas. Please sign up for one or more items on the sign up sheet (under Volunteers tab) to help this family have an amazing Christmas.

We will have a Wrap Party on December 20 from 5:30pm - 7pm in the Keppel Cafeteria. PLEASE bring the gift you have signed up for and your 5th grader to help wrap the gifts and participate in the wonderful feeling of helping others. If you cannot attend the party, please have your child bring their gift to their classroom onMonday, Dec. 19.

If we fill up all the spaces on the list, I will add more items!

PLEASE INCLUDE GIFT RECEIPTS WITH ALL OF YOUR GIFTS.

Dance Class info

As you may know, we have switched our arts class this trimester from visual art to dance.  Attached is a notice from Mrs. Neel...

Your students will be participating in Spirit Day next February and will be required to have BLACK jazz shoes to perform.  Attached are suggestions for a jazz shoe.

I do not personally like a tie shoe as they seem to always come undone during performances.  I opt for elastic gussets as shown in the picture.  The gusset can either be ON top center or on the sides.  I just happen to prefer the center gusset for a cleaner line on the foot.

On researching other outlets for purchase I also discovered Sears and Payless carry jazz shoes as well as eBay and Amazon.  The three most reliable however are the ones listed.  Please note that street shoe size does NOT always translate in dance shoe size.  I wear an 8.5 and my jazz shoes are a 9.5 or a 10 depending on brand.  Trying them on is a MUST unless you are absolutely sure of the sizing.

Once purchased - please make sure that they wear them with a light sock at first to break them in and then by performance time, they will be softer and molded to the foot so they can wear them WITHOUT the sock.  Some of my last students purchased their shoes a few days before the performance and they ended up with painful blisters because the leather was still stiff. They need to be broken in to eliminate that happening to your child.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via school e-mail atcneel@gusd.net.
