Today we started CELDT testing (California English Language Development Test) for ELD students.  It should take about three or four days and has four categories (speaking, listening, reading, writing).  This is for ELD students only.  Because of this test, we have abbreviated (hour long) math and language arts sections this week.

Studied exapnded notation, standard notation, and writing numbers with words

Language Arts

Worked with expository text and nonfiction
Assigned grammar worksheet (declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, imperative sentences)

Took notes on the classification of organisms and the animal family

Took a brief self assessment on cells and organisms

PTA Food Drive info

Aug 24, 2015

This is the week of the PTA food drive.  Please donate!

I have also shown the class the MKS Foundation video and have passed out envelopes requesting donations (in any amount) to MKS.  This money is what funds the majority of arts programs in our school. Any amount will help keep the arts fully funded at Keppel, maintaining the high standard we have achieved here.

Math

Worked on division today.  If your child does not know how to do long division, please help!  They are already way behind if that is the case.  I am on it as well obviously, but at a certain point the class has to move on.  We will be using this skill all year

Language Arts

p. 7, 9, 10 assigned, reading log due Friday, spelling/vocab test this Friday as well

Science (Hewitt)

Read through lesson 3 - Diversity of Organisms, worksheet on cells due Friday

Still working on place value - thousands, hundreds, tens, ones

You MUST have a reading book that you enjoy ready for tomorrow.  Tomorrow will be a mini read-a-thon, so bring a book and enjoy

We have started a reading unit.  This week pages 1 through 5 are to be completed in the workbook.  There will be a spelling/vocabulary test Friday.  Spelling words are on page 5, vocabulary words are on page 1.

Aug 12, 2015

Today I sent home a booklet with a number of things to sign.  Here's a breakdown on the items:

Form 1, 2 - go ahead and sign these, they mean that you have received the paperwork

Form 3 - allows access to the internet

Form 4 - only sign if your child is on medication

Form 5 - excuses your child from instruction on human reproduction.  We don't teach that.  No need to sign.  At the end of the year, there is a district lesson about puberty that you will receive a permission slip on at the time.

Form 6 - sign yes or no for photography and video.  This is a blanket form.  If an event actually occurs we will let you know at that time

Form 7 - skip

It would be ideal if I could have these turned in by tomorrow.  This has been one of the best years for receiving this paperwork on time!

Tomorrow - the full switch!  Let me know if you have any questions

Aug 11, 2015

We started to get a little more into the swing of things today, including taking our first baseline iReady assessment.  Tomorrow, we will switch classes at least once and we will guide you through that process.

Today I sent home two blue emergency cards that need filling out with the same information.  Please fill out both as they are stored in separate locations.

I also sent home a red colored notice from the principal asking that no nut or nut based snacks arrive at school.  A helpful list of alternative snacks is provided on the back.  We have a number of students that are severely allergic and could be hospitalized quite easily.  It's a small request that saves a lot of difficulty.

Don't forget that Back To School Night is next Wednesday night.

Thanks again, and if there are any questions or concerns please let me know at mhewitt@gusd.net

Aug 10, 2015 first day of school

Welcome to my blog!

If you've found it of course.  This is my way of communicating daily curriculum, assignments, and information to you in an easy to reach format.

Today was a fantastic first day, and in fact was one of the better ones in recent memory.  Our new principal Christine Siegal was excited about meeting students, parents, and whole classes.

Today I asked every student to bring home their student information card to be filled out and signed by parents.  Please make sure this is ready for tomorrow.

Also, I have officially started science today and have given an assignment.  It is to do the questions on pages 33.  The first unit we will be studying is on plant and animal cells.

There is an absolute ton of information to disseminate over the next two weeks, most of which will be answered on Back To School Night which is on August 19 from 7 to 8 pm.  If there are any immediate questions or pressing needs, feel free to email me, call, or come by at any time.

Thank you,
Michael Hewitt
