Class info Feb 26

Today we did a special class project with "The Wizard of Oz" as most of the Master Class was on a field trip.  There were no assignments that anyone missed.

Why don't you drop by the Book Fair tonight?  Great books for a low price, and proceeds benefit 5th grade.  It's 6 to 8 pm in the "Black Box Theater" room on the bottom floor.

Book Fair

Did you know book fair proceeds benefit 5th grade? It's a win/win.  You get books for a much lower price than Barnes and Noble, and the 5th grade gets money.

Thursday Night from 6 to 8 is Book Fair Night, where authors will be coming in,  reading their books and signing them.  What better way to have fun with the family in a literary activity, authenticate and solidify an amazing experience for your budding lifetime reader, and help out the 5th grade?  Join us!

proofreading personal narratives today

Assignments due Friday Feb 27 so far:

1.   Completed personal narrative

Criteria for a successful personal narrative:

a.   use the five senses as imagery
b.   the writer learns something in the narrative
c.   strong opening sentence that grabs the reader's attention

2.   Opinion piece on Nick Maney's On Respect: What I Learned From Carl

The first sentence has to reference the text and the author.  For example, you could write: In Nick Maney's essay On Respect: What I Learned From Carl, the author believes that...

Elsewhere in the paragraph, Maney's text MUST be quoted.  Here's an example : Nick Maney states that "I think that the world would be a much better place that we could share together, as humans.

This is due Friday Feb 27.  Like before, there's no length requirement, but I can't imagine students being too successful detailing and explaining their opinion in less than half a page.  Font size 12 or 14, with a professional style.  Final copy should be stapled on top of the rough copy and an excerpt.

Colonial Day help wanted

Colonial Day is a HUGE event and one that your 5th grader will certainly remember at the end of their school years.  Why not be a part of it?  It won't be too labor intensive and it will be a great moment with your child.  I also guarantee that it will be one of the best ones we've ever had.  If you can help, take the day off work and enjoy it with us.

If you don't often have the chance to help and would like to, this is the one event I would recommend doing.

Sorry for the lack of a post yesterday.  The server must have crashed.  Today, between the panoramic 5th grade photo and promotion photos, we didn't get too much accomplished in math and language arts.

Tomorrow there is a quick 15 question multiple choice science quiz.  Make sure you know the basic organ systems and organs.

book fair

Want to help at the book fair?  It's the last week of February and proceeds benefit the whole school.  5th grade committee is running it this year.

Valentine's Day

We are NOT having a party on Valentine's Day as we are legally only allowed two official parties per year.  5th grade does Christmas and end-of-year parties instead of Christmas and Valentine's Day.  However, I will definitely allow time on Friday for the passing out of valentines and candy, etc. so long as no candy is consumed at school.  Make sure that every kid is accounted for, and that treats are 100% nut free.

Here are the first names of the class:

Dennis,  Rita,  Jamir,  Logan,  Anna,  Talia,  Raymond,  Alexandra,  Julio,  Tyler,  Adrina,  Ledisia,  Cindy,  Hovo,  Angela,  Mary,  Kayla,  Nicole,  Lucca,  Emanuel,  Anthony,  Joseph,  Arthur,  Arman,  Alec,  Tania,  Emily,  Simon,  Sonya,  Jada,  Areg,  Nicholas,  Mona,  Svetlana,  Ruth,  Sanaheh

Colonial related free and fun activity

Another fun activity that you can do at home is visit the Glendale Galleria.  This month, they have Lego sculptures of historical monuments related to the 5th grade curriculum.  I've known a number of families that have gone, and they've all really enjoyed it.  Here's the info:

California Streaming Contest

The not-so-well named California Streaming Contest is happening again this year for the state of California.  This is a photography contest for kids that's really cool.  I've even had a state winner in my class a couple of years ago.  If you have a kid that's a bit of a shutterbug, have them apply.
